EDUARDO ALBERTO GONZALEZ GALENO

He was the Director of Cunco Hospital (800 km south of Santiago). His dedication to his rural patients gained him the love and respect of these mainly peasants and Mapuches (native Chileans).

He was arrested on 14th September 1973 with his pregnant wife Natacha at the hospital during work hours and in front of numerous witnesses. They were taken by helicopter to the Air Force grounds where they were badly tortured and accused of subversion. After that they were separated. She was sent to the women's prison of Temuco where she remained until August 1975, giving birth to her second child in that awful place and under terrible circumstances. Natacha never received an answer or explanation from the military authorities regarding the fate of her husband. Unofficially, his brother was told that Eduardo had been so badly tortured that he died and that his broken body was thrown away in the middle of a lake.

In July 1979, the Third Police Station of the region informed that his arrest had not been registered and that the 1973 registration books had been incinerated in compliance with an order.
