Letter: Iron Lady's Return

Sir: To quote Lord Lamont at a fringe meeting of the Conservative Party conference - "She's back! Lady Thatcher."

And what brought her back to the rostrum after her nine-year retirement but her love affair with an ideological brother-in-arms, General Pinochet of Chile? How she must have envied his free hand, unfettered by the constraints of democracy, to quell the left-wing subversion in his country, thinly disguised as the will of the people. How she spat her venom at our Prime Minister for hauling this "true friend of Great Britain" out of his "bed of pain", in the dead of night, to face some "trumped-up charge."

And how the faithful lapped it up. How they clapped and cheered. How they showed their true colours.

The Iron Lady has often been described as a woman of vision. I shudder to wonder what her vision for this country was, had she been allowed to lead it in a fourth term of office. Thankfully we were spared the tragedy of finding out the answer. She is no longer a political force, but those who cheered and clapped on Wednesday are. Let us beware.
