Traces of Memory is a vast photographic installation about the 'disappeared' in Latin America. It consists of about fifty images printed on glass. They highlight the frailty of life and evoke memory - photographs are the only remaining evidence of an existence which is no longer there. The questions, "Are you alive?", "Are you dead?" echo throughout Norma Schenke's haunting installation. The work invites the viewer to walk around while images of everyday life are projected onto a circle of thin cloth screens. It engages the audience in an uneasy experience in which a series of opposites emerge; life-death, presence-absence, loss and hope. |
